Of course there are half-ready products but I like it best when I make my own homemade lasagna.
There are several ways to make Lasagna. You can use different types of cheese both in the sauce and on top.
I like nutmeg in the sauce, others do not use it.
The typical thing about European lasagna is that the sauce is thick and the lasagna plates are softer while in Italy they make the lasagna more thin and preferably without meat as it’s is often served as an appetizer.see also ( Cream au gratin potatoes with garlic )
The Italian lasagna also has more garlic in the recipes.
It is a lot of work when you make it from scratch, but you can prepare the tomato sauce a day ahead to win time.
Ingredients for the tomato sauce
- 2 cans of tomatoes
- 2 teaspoons tomato puree
- 1 onion
- 4 medium-sized carrots
- 4 garlic cloves
- Salt
- Pepper
- Water
- Some oil
- 600 g minced meat
I fry the meat and I use salt and pepper but that depends on what type of minced meat you have.
Since the minced meat should go into a sauce and into the oven, it’s okay to put it all together in the pan so it gets fried unlike how I do it if I had it in a casserole dish or with rice.
How to prepare tomato sauce for lasagna
I cut onions, garlic and grate the carrots (you can cut them into small pieces, but since I’m a parent of small children and have experienced that if I’ve grated the carrots it will be easier to get the kids to eat the sauce).
I put the oil in a saucepan, blanch the onion a little before I put in the tomato puree and let it fry a little.
Then I add the tomatoes and garlic and fill the casserole with water.
I let it boil until the water is almost gone then add the carrots, the spices and more water.
I let it simmer until I get a good thick sauce.
The longer the sauce cooks the better it tastes.
Afterards I put in the minced meat that I have fried and let it cook in the sauce.
Ingredients for the cheese sauce
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 200 grams cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter
- A little parmesan
- 1/2 nutmeg
- Salt and pepper
- Milk
How to prepare the cheese sauce for lasagna
I make the sauce like the regular white sauce.
Put the butter in a saucepan and let it melt.
Add the wheat flour while you stir then pour the milk and keep stirring little by little until you get a slightly thick white sauce.
Put the cheeses and stir well and add milk if the sauce becomes too thick.

How to prepare homemade Lasagna
I let both the white sauce and the tomato sauce cool before I grease a mold.
At first add white sauce, lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, lasagne, white sauce, etc. until I have four layers.
On the top of lasagna I add grated mozerella.
I set the oven at 180 degrees for about 40-45 minutes.
If I see that the cheese turns brown before the lasagna plates become soft, I put over it aluminum foil.
Remember to let the lasagna rest before you start cutting it so you get nice, firm serving pieces.
As a side dish, you can have garlic bread with herbs and a good salad with olive oil.
