Kerkouane (Arabic: كركوان) is an ancient Tunisian site located on the eastern coast of the Cape Bon peninsula, six kilometers north of Hammam Ghezèze.
It shelters a city and a Punic necropolis registered on the list of the world heritage of Unesco since November 28, 19861 because they are the only examples of Punic architecture not to have undergone modifications on behalf of later civilizations. Indeed, probably destroyed and abandoned during the First Punic War (mid-third century BC), the city will not be rebuilt by the Romans.
Kerkouane, one of the most important Punic cities with Carthage, Hadrumète and Utica, existed for almost 400 years.
